Is there something better for Sunday breakfast than french toast? Yummy! This Baked French Toast recipe is delicious … I know it contains lots of sugar and carbs, but at least it is oven baked (not fried).
You can use whole grain or gluten-free bread, brown sugar, fat-free milk and egg-whites instead of whole eggs… all these substitutions will make your french toast healthier ;).
Baked French Toast – Ingredients
1 loaf whole grain French bread (13 to 16 ounces)
8 egg whites
2 cups fat-free milk
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Topping
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Baked French Toast – How to prepare:
Slice bread into 1-inch slices. Arrange slices in a greased baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices.
In a large bowl, combine the eggs-whites, milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon and whisk until blended.
Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, preheat oven to 350F. Mix together the topping ingredients (brown sugar, honey and cinnamon) and spread it over the bread.
Bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden.
It goes along perfectly with coffee :D.
Merry Christmas, everybody!
